As a former general consultant, mail vendor, and long-time political operative now building with the team at Numinar, I’m consistently met with one question from industry leaders: Where does paid relational organizing fit into a campaign budget?

Paid relational organizing isn’t a hard sell—people intuitively understand it. In a fragmented media environment, the most persuasive message is still one delivered by someone you trust, and financial incentives simply make that trust-based outreach scalable.

There, I said it. 

Trim the mail budget—slightly—and reallocate it to paid relational organizing. 

Both channels deliver one-to-one messages, but while mail delivers a message from the campaign or an ambiguously-named PAC, Relational Organizing delivers it from a trusted friend. 

Mail is easy to ignore; texts from people you know are read immediately and remembered. At their core, both tactics aim to influence voters individually, one message at a time. The difference is that relational organizing doesn’t just reach a voter—it reaches them through someone they trust. The same message, delivered through a personal connection, is far more likely to land.

Treat It Like Media

Include paid relational organizing in the media budget. Campaigns already invest in TV, streaming, digital ads, and video production to push content out at scale—relational organizing ensures that the same content is sent through trusted networks.

Consider a campaign video designed to resonate or even go viral. Instead of relying on algorithms or paid impressions, use the “influencers” in a voter’s personal network. A supporter might text a friend, “Have you seen this?” with the campaign’s video embedded in the message.

Television and streaming remain valuable for broad reach. Paid Relational Organizing distributes key messages through a high-trust channel that complements traditional media.
